Since its foundation over 60 years ago, the Welsh Society of Hull & East Yorkshire has acted as a focal point for people living or working in the area connected with or interested in Wales and things Welsh. Members of the Society represent many walks of life and their ages range from the young to the not so young.
There are sufficient Welsh speakers in the Society to cater for anyone who wants to practice their Welsh, although the majority are not Welsh speaking. Please do not be put off if you are not Welsh - there are many long standing and valued members who are English, Scottish, Irish, etc.
Meetings are normally held at Cottingham Parks Golf & Leisure Club (Woodhill Way, Cottingham, HU16 5SW) commencing at 7.45 pm, on the 3rd Friday of each month from September to May with extra gatherings at special times of the year. These are, in the main, social occasions, although we do attempt to broaden our education from time to time.
The annual St David's Day Dinner is one of the highspots of the Society's programme. (Click on Photo Gallery for pictures of the 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011 Dinners)
Another highspot is the Male Voice Choir Concert which we organise every few years, the proceeds of which are donated to charity. The last one was on 23 October 2010 with the Driffield Male Voice Choir at the Hull Guildhall raised £1100 for the Teenage Cancer Trust Young Adult Unit at Castle Hill Hospital. The previous concert in 2008 with the Beverley Male Voice Choir raised £1000 for the Cardio-Thoracic Unit, also at Castle Hill Hospital (for a photograph of the presentation of the cheque click on Photo Gallery).
If you are interested in joining us, why not come along to a few of our meetings and see what you think. Guests, non-members and visitors to the area are always most welcome.
